Dr. Devon MacDermott

Practice Owner

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST IN NYC

I am a psychologist practicing in New York City offering mindfulness-based,  energetic, compassionate therapy that emphasizes embracing greater self-compassion, curiosity, presence, and genuineness.

I use a flexible, integrative approach that meets you where you are. With extensive training in mindfulness, trauma recovery, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and humanistic therapy, I can teach you to overcome painful patterns and improve your work, relationships, and life.

Psychotherapy offers a beautiful and unique opportunity for healing, self-discovery, and resilience. I am reminded daily of the honor of being allowed to see my clients’ true selves and participate in their growth. It is an honor that I cherish.

Please contact me if you think we may be a good fit for pursuing your growth.

SPECIALIZATIONS

OCD

I practice the gold standard in OCD recovery, Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). ERP teaches you to reduce ineffective worrying, catastrophic thinking, and time-consuming compulsions and replace them with healthy coping skills. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) including ERP and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can teach you to get back into the driver’s seat of your mind and take control of your life.

Trauma and Attachment Wounds

I use an integrative approach in recovery from trauma and attachment wounds including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, and Internal Family Systems (IFS) that allows for traumatic memories to become unstuck and heal. These approaches help you heal from trauma and distressing life events more quickly than standard talk therapy. Trauma therapy, informed by neurobiology and modern brain research, allows the mind to access its natural healing abilities and release the pain, fear, and confusion associated with distressing events. These interventions teach you to overcome the problematic patterns that you find yourself repeating in your life and relationships.

Cult Recovery

“A cult is any group that won’t let you leave with your dignity intact.” - Diane Hamilton

As a trauma therapist, I am uniquely positioned to help people who have left high-control groups. A high-control group is any organization, religion, or relationship in which the members are strongly influenced by a leader or small group of leaders. High-control groups often oppose critical thought, encourage magical thinking, and implant self-doubt and self-blame. These experiences are deeply traumatic and can upend a cult survivor’s sense of self and the world. Using trauma-based therapeutic approaches and a compassionate understanding of how smart, well-meaning people can find themselves in a high-control group, I can help you make sense of your experience and heal the fear, moral injury, confusion, and grief that you may be experiencing.

Neurodiverse Relationships

I specialize in working with neurotypical partners in a neurodiverse relationship. If your partner has been diagnosed or you suspect that they are on the Autism Spectrum, I can help you navigate the complicated waters of learning to speak the new language of Autism. You can learn how to better communicate, live, and c0-parent with your partner while we make space for your grief, confusion, and frustration. Neurodiverse couples literally have different brains and we can make concrete steps to bring you closer and understand each other better.
